The International Year of Astronomy 2009
The vision of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery. All humans should realize the impact of astronomy and basic sciences on our daily lives, and understand better how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society.

Let us share the Galileo's surprise
Galileo Galilei's surprise in 1609, when he observed the universe through his tiny hand-made telescope, was great and luxurious. Mountains and valleys cover the surface of the Moon which had been believed as a perfect sphere of crystal! The milky way is full of countless faint stars! The Jupiter has four moons rotating around it! The sun is rotating on its axes!
Discovery causes new mystery, and mystery induces new discovery. The novel universe which Galileo discovered was just an entrance to the 400 years history of exploration of the magnificent universe, and now it is still in progress. Let us share the Galileo's surprise.
Let us share the excitement of exploration of boundless mystery of nature. We wish the IYA2009 be a wonderful platform to support, encourage, and cultivate the mind of curiosity and mind of science.
Norio Kaifu,
Chair of IYA2009 Japan Committee
